Traditional Chinese Medicine Regulated My Period

Traditional Chinese Medicine Regulated My Period

My period was never normal. I didn’t know that it was supposed to be predictable. Sometimes I would go months with no cycle and other times my cycles would follow each other quickly. Most adults in my life said it was “normal” to have irregular cycles. I finally brought it up with my OB/GYN and she suggested I take oral birth control.

I was never keen on taking pharmaceuticals, but since my doctor prescribed it, I trusted it would be safe and effective. Sometimes I had a “normal” cycle. A year later, I discovered the birth control I was taking caused many women to die from pulmonary embolism. This horrified me! So, I immediately stopped taking it, which caused severe cramping, as well as body aches, during my next several cycles. I decided I would rather have an unpredictable period than one that was sometimes predictable and dependent on a potentially deadly medication.

I went through college worried about when my next cycle would come. Unlike my friends, I had no warning signs. I felt fortunate that I didn’t have pain, but I would have liked a clue before my cycle started. After my undergraduate studies in molecular cellular developmental biology, I decided I wanted to go to medical or veterinary school, I realized western medicine wasn’t my calling. I believed there were too many drugs that caused worse side-effects than the patient’s original complaints. On top of that, most medications were so new there was little information about long-term side effects!

While searching for a new career, I met an acupuncturist and fell in love with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. I promptly enrolled at The Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Denver. There, I learned that “normal” stomach-aches and body pains were actually not the norm. In fact, we can live a pain-free, a constipation-and-diarrhea-free and, imagine this, an irregular-period-free life!

This was so exciting! I immediately began to diagnose myself with traditional Chinese medicine patterns. I also scheduled regular acupuncture treatments with my classmates and professors. I remember one professor telling me, I thought you would be an easy case. You’re young and healthy, your cycle should regulate quickly. But no. Your case is not easy but we will figure it out.

After six treatments over a period of three months, as well as taking Chinese herbs regularly, my cycle became normal. Acupuncture and herbal medicine (safely and side-effect free) had fixed my life-long health issue!

I love acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. This medicine has fulfilled my personal life in so many ways. It has empowered me to be in control of my health and enabled me to help my loved ones, even my dog! My goal is to share and spread the benefits of Chinese medicine to everyone and enable them to feel empowered too. I am so excited to have joined Chiropractic Health and Acupuncture in Frisco. I look forward to helping Summit County heal safely and naturally.
